The action packed Star Trek: Prodigy is back, after a long while, no thanks to Paramount’s decision to un-renew the show and remove it’s entire catalogue from the platform. A move, that we still are scratching our heads over. The good news, Season 2 was already finished by then, and Netflix saved the show. After months and months of waiting, the entire 20 episode season is finally available for us fans, and so far, it does not dissapoint.
Robert Beltran joins the second season as his Star Trek: Voyager character, Chakotay. Beltran and Mulgrew and guest star Robert Picardo were in all seven seasons of Star Trek: Voyager. This feels like the closest we will get to a spinoff or continuation of the series.
The adventure begins a few months after the events of the season 1 finale. Gwyn (Ella Purnell) had left the group to return to her home world, determined to prevent her father’s future actions. The rest of the crew stayed behind and enrolled in Starfleet Academy, aiming to further their education and training. During the opening minutes of the first episode, Jankom (Jason Mantzoukas), Zero (Angus Imrie), Rok (Rylee Alazraqui), Murf (Dee Bradley Baker), and Dal (Brett Gray) each receive an unexpected invitation from Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to join her on a special mission.
Excited and curious, the group meets their new guide, The Doctor (Robert Picardo), who reveals that they will be serving on the newly commissioned USS Voyager. The show establishes the timeline, indicating that Starfleet is currently busy aiding the Romulans with relocation efforts, a storyline occurring about 20 to 25 years before the events of Star Trek: Picard season 1.
Each member of the crew is offered a position that aligns with their skills and interests. However, Dal is assigned to research, a role he finds tedious and uninteresting. Feeling left out and bored, he tries to convince the others to join him in sneaking into the bridge for some fun. However, Rok is firmly against it, arguing that they have worked too hard to risk everything now. Frustrated by the rejection, Dal retreats to his quarters and contacts Gwyn. Their conversation becomes awkward when Dal inquires about their future together, and the communication is abruptly cut off, leaving Dal even more unsettled.
Meanwhile, in sickbay, Zero expresses his sorrow over not being able to experience emotions like humanoids. The Doctor sympathizes with him, sharing his own struggles with understanding and processing feelings. Suddenly, The Doctor receives an urgent communication from Janeway regarding their mission. As he is not adept at lying, he hastily leaves sickbay, arousing Zero’s suspicion.
Zero then visits Dal and confides in him about his concerns. He believes that Admiral Janeway is hiding something important about their mission. With the help of his friends, except for Rok who remains skeptical, they investigate and uncover a cloaked ship hidden in a secret shuttle bay. They witness Admiral Janeway, The Doctor, and a select few bridge officers loyal to Janeway entering the bay. Using the ship’s computer, they reveal the existence of the Infinity, a vessel designed to navigate a temporal rift and rescue Chakotay, who is stranded in the future.
It is revealed that Admiral Jellico (Ronny Cox) has rescinded the mission due to the numerous dangerous obstacles and potential risks involved. Despite this, Janeway is determined to proceed, believing that rescuing Chakotay is worth the risk. The crew is now faced with a moral dilemma: whether to follow orders or join Janeway in her unauthorized mission to save their friend.
