The series premiere opens with a suspenseful scene: a boy and a girl sneak into Sunnydale High School under cover of darkness. While the boy’s intentions are clear—he wants to impress the girl—her initial nervousness about getting caught quickly dissipates. As he reassures her that the coast is clear, she reveals her true nature, transforming into a vampire and attacking him. This shocking twist sets the tone for the series.
We meet Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as she wakes from a vivid nightmare filled with cryptic images, possibly foretelling future events. Buffy has just transferred to Sunnydale High after an incident at her previous school where she burned down the gym—a consequence of her secret life as a Vampire Slayer. On her first day, she literally bumps into Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon) and unknowingly drops her stake, leaving him puzzled.
Buffy encounters Cordelia Chase (Charisma Carpenter), the quintessential mean girl, who quickly reveals her disdain for others, particularly Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan). In the school library, Buffy meets Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), the new school librarian and her Watcher. Giles presents her with a book about vampires, prompting Buffy to flee the library, determined to leave her Slayer duties behind.
Later, Buffy befriends Willow and meets Jesse (Eric Balfour), another member of their social circle. The day takes a grim turn when Cordelia announces that gym class is canceled due to the discovery of a dead body stuffed in a locker. Buffy’s instincts kick in, and her investigation of the body reveals telltale signs of a vampire bite. She reluctantly consults Giles, who emphasizes that her presence in Sunnydale is no coincidence; the town sits on a Hellmouth, a focal point for supernatural activity. Buffy dismisses his warnings, unaware that Xander has overheard their conversation.

On her way to The Bronze, Sunnydale’s local hangout, Buffy senses someone following her. She meets Angel (David Boreanaz), a mysterious figure who warns her of impending danger and gives her a cross necklace as a protective charm. At the club, Buffy encourages Willow to seize the moment, only to discover moments later that Willow has caught the attention of a vampire.
Meanwhile, Jesse unknowingly becomes Darla’s (Julie Benz) latest target. Darla, the vampire from the opening scene, is part of a larger, sinister plot. Angel cryptically mentions “The Harvest,” which Giles later identifies as a ritual to resurrect The Master (Mark Metcalf), an ancient and powerful vampire.
Buffy intervenes just in time to save Willow and Jesse, escaping with Xander’s help. As Giles pieces together the significance of The Harvest, the stakes become clear: this is just the beginning of a much larger battle. The episode concludes with a tense cliffhanger as Luke (Brian Thompson), one of The Master’s most loyal followers, looms over Buffy, ready to strike.
