While Buffy eagerly anticipates a date with Owen, Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) and the gang begin investigating ominous events, suspecting that something major is happening involving The Master. At the same time, a bus filled with innocent people is slaughtered by vampires. As Buffy insists on going ahead with her second date with Owen, Giles, Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and Xander (Nicholas Brendon) continue their investigation. Their efforts take an unexpected turn when they are forced to interrupt Buffy’s date to deal with the rising threat.

In a shocking twist, Owen follows Buffy to a funeral home, where they, along with the gang, find themselves cornered as one of the corpses rises. Though Buffy fights bravely, Owen struggles with the horror and chaos surrounding him. Ultimately, the pressure is too much for him, and he walks away, though he surprises Buffy by asking her out again. Sadly, his reasons for pursuing her have less to do with her heart and more with the danger she represents.

As the episode concludes, the stakes grow higher. The Master reveals the true identity of the Annointed One—an innocent-looking young boy, signaling that darker days are ahead for Buffy and her friends.
