In this gripping episode, Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) receives orders to head to the planet Solem to keep a close watch on Ascencia’s (Nina Sosanya) efforts in building a formidable army. The primary concern is the potential threat this new army poses to the galaxy. Meanwhile, Gwyn (Ella Purnell) devises a daring plan to return to Solem with her crew to not only gather crucial intelligence but also to rescue her father, who is in grave danger.
Rok (Jin Malley) innovates a piece of advanced technology that will cloak them from detection, providing them with a strategic advantage. They are also provided with a transporter enhancer, but it is equipped for only a single use. After beaming down to the planet, the team begins to strategize their next moves in this high-stakes situation.
Their plans take an unexpected turn when they receive a secretive communication leading them to Gwyn’s father’s lab. To their shock, they encounter an alternate version of Ascencia who reveals that she has vowed never to become the monstrous figure her older counterpart has become. She discloses that Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) has been kidnapped and that Gwyn’s father is being sent to a grim prison camp. Maj’el (Ronnie Rowe Jr.) advises against attempting both rescue missions simultaneously, asserting that it would be too dangerous. However, Rok passionately disagrees, emphasizing the critical importance of both objectives. Ultimately, Gwyn makes a tough decision to split the team into two groups: one to rescue her father and the other to save Wesley.
As the groups go their separate ways, Dal (Brett Gray) and his team manage to rescue Gwyn’s father, while Gwyn successfully rescues Wesley. However, Wesley is too weak to use the transporter to return them to Voyager. Wesley then reveals that his kidnapping was a part of a larger, orchestrated plan. Zero (voiced by Jason Mantzoukas), who has been disgruntled about losing his physical form, is not pleased with the turn of events. He states that Gwyn’s father will be positioned as the leader once the Protostar is sent back in time. Zero then realizes that several crew members are missing, which drives him into a fit of rage and confusion, as he can no longer foresee the unfolding events.
As the team makes their way out of the prison, they discover that the malevolent Ascencia has tracked them down and is about to execute Gwyn’s father. In a dramatic moment, Dal throws the transporter device, managing to transport both Wesley and Gwyn’s father to the safety of Voyager. To Janeway’s (Kate Mulgrew) astonishment, Wesley (Wil Wheaton) informs her that they are in imminent danger and admits his inability to predict future events. Overcome with exhaustion and stress, Wesley then faints, leaving the crew to confront the impending threats without any further guidance.
